As with all of the FIFA games, there are a number of improvements. Hundreds, according to the game's producer. Improved responsiveness is also a noted change, which allows for more control over the ball and a shoulder-to-shoulder system that takes into account the players' strength when they jostle. A further expansion of this system allows for a massive overhaul of the player-to-player collision system that takes into account each player's speed, weight and power. Additionally, the goalkeeper has been improved to have better reactions, faster recovery and better positioning.

 

The weather system has also been improved to allow for rain, snow, day, dusk and night matches, dependent on the stadium. Manager mode does not see the weather changes. Again, this is not an exhaustive list, but these are some of the major additions and changes.

The latest game to be released, it has less improvements than the previous game, but perhaps more important for some. The Manager mode has been overhauled in many ways. It now shows news about other users' Manager Mode events and an Assistant Manager can be used to look after some of the game's other features, such as the team line up. The Auto-Resolve matches are now based on each team's strength, rather than random, as it was suggested in the past. The football players now improve based on ingame performance rather than the previous manual improvements.

The release of Madden 11 will be one of the most hyped and anticipated events in 2010. Madden has been on the scene for 21 years, and pretty much everyone who is a fan of football or video games has picked it up and played. The team behind Madden even attends the NFL Draft every year in order to get headshots of rookies in their NFL uniforms as early as humanly possible. Along with the game's popularity has grown a huge pro gaming industry, and now the world's top Madden players can make a living playing in tournaments or even just online. You may have also heard the term "Madden Holiday"...and it just goes to show how incredibly popular it has become.

 

For all the good that comes with the hype and hysteria of Madden NFL, there is a downfall to the game's yearly release. In 1999, John Madden relinquished the cover of each game to a player...and since then, those players have ahd notortiously rough years.

 

Last year was no exception to the Madden curse, and it made it's mark in the very first week of the regular season. For the first time in the series' history, two players graced the cover of Madden NFL 10. It's a classic matchup that re-lives the drama of Super Bowl 43; Larry Fitzgerald of the Cardinals and Troy Polomalu of the championship Steelers. In the Steelers' first regular season game, and Troy Polomalu's first after being put on the cover of Madden 10, he injured his ankle while blocking a field goal. The Steelers had to play the rest of the season without their star defensive player.

 

One would think that everyone in the league would have learned to avoid Madden by now. When EA Sports comes calling, it's probably in everybody's best interest to decline the offer regardless of how prestigious and financially rewarding the opportunity might be. As history has shown, going on the Madden NFL cover is almost guaranteed to affect a player, and probably his team, negatively.

 

Notable instances of the Madden NFL curse:

 

2002: QB Daunte Culpepper was honored with a Madden 02 cover appearance folliowing his team's final four appearance in 2000. He followed this up by missing the last five games of the 2001 season with a hurt knee, and his team missed the playoffs.

 

2003: After gracing the cover of Madden 03, RB Marshall Faulk played the whole 2002 season with a hurt ankle and missed the 1,000 rushing yard mark for the first time in 6 years while his team rounded out the season with a 7-9 record, which wasn;t good enough for a playoff appearance.

 

2004: Atlanta Falcons quarterback and franchise cornerstone Michael Vick was selected for the 2004 installment of Madden NFL, but missed the entire season after suffering a fractured right fibula in a preseason game and watched his team finish with a 5-11 record.

 

2006: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was coming off a Super Bowl appearance, in which his team lost to the New England Patriots. But as the Madden NFL 06 cover athlete, his 2005 was destined for disaster and he suffered a sports hernia in the first game and ended up shutting down for the last seven games of the season.
